Spain, Argentina and Czech Rep advance to the semis – 2012 Davis Cup

SPAIN – AUSTRIA 4-1

As predicted, it was a very easy one for Spain even without Rafa. You know, when you have Ferrer and Almagro playing singles on clay against Austria (with Melzer not in top form) … you can’t expect anything different.

In fact, Ferrer won 7-5 6-3 6-3 against Melzer and Almagro 7-5 7-5 with Peya in the death 5th rubber.

“I’m really happy to have won both my matches and that Spain are in the semifinals again,” said Ferrer. “I played with confidence and in the important moments I think I played better than him.”

‘It was more fun to be out there today to be honest,’ said Melzer. ‘Ferrer is a tough competitor, a great clay court player and he just proved why he is No. 5 in the world. I felt like I had a high level of tennis today but it just wasn’t enough.

Spain will play USA on the home soil in the semis.

ARGENTINA – CROATIA 4-1

No problems for the Argentinian team to destroy Croatia.

Helped by his own crowd, Delpo left only 4 games to Mario Cilic.

“Yes, it wasn’t easy for me. The crowd was very important. It’s always amazing when you get a victory to go through, in your country. We have a good team this year to fight for the Davis Cup. I am really glad, and the whole team is happy this weekend”

To be fair, Mario was really tired after he had to play 2 back to back 5 hours marathons in the previous 2 days against Nalbadian and in the doubles.

Monaco completed the scoreline beating Veic 6-1 6-1.

CZECH REP – SERBIA 4-1

This was the most controversial tie of the quarterfinals after the altercation between Stepanek and Tipsarevic and the refusal of Bozoljac to shake hands with Radek at the end of the doubles

Finally Berdych won a very tight 3 set match with Tipsarevic 7-6 (6) 7-6 (6) 7-6 (7).

Luckily the tie did not go to a decisive 5th rubber. In fact it would have been Stepanek and Troiki…think about the fireworks!!!!

So we had only a ‘death match’ where Bosol defeated Troicki 7-6 (5) 7-5.
