Bianca Andreescu needs to wait for even more to get back to competitions. The Canadian sensation played her last tournament 15 months ago. Then Bianca was stopped by a couple of injuries (knee and foot) and by the pandemic.
Bianca had her pre-season in Dubai and for some “mysterious” reasons, she decided not to play the WTA event in Abu Dhabi like most of the other players that were already in the region.
Why Andreescu will not play the Grampians Trophy
Bianca had to endure a strict quarantine in Melbourne without the opportunity to leave her room for 14 days. The WTA organized a tournament with a small draw of 28 (The Grampians Trophy) for the players that had to endure strict confinement. Therefore, Bianca was part of that draw where she was seeded no.1, but eventually she decided to withdraw.
This was her statement:
“Following the last two weeks in quarantine, it feels so good to finally be back on the court. After discussing it with my team, we have decided to focus this week on training for the Australian Open and miss the Grampians. Many thanks to Tennis Australia and the WTA for their hard work in providing us all of these choices. See you all at the Australian Open!”
Bianca’s place in the draw is taken by Maria Sakkari that moved at the top of the draw.
A few days ago, Bianca revealed that she got emotional about thinking that she was getting closer to yet playing her first tournament after so much time. That probably needs to wait some more.
