The 2012 BRD Nastase Tiriac Throphy did record a big upset. Seed nr.2 and defending champion Florian Mayer lost to the Belgian Xavier Malisse.
Mayer did not play well the important points to convert only 3 out of 10 break points. On the other side the Belgian was much more effective (4 break points converted out of 5).
“I played well,” said Malisse. “I think we played a good match and I’m very happy to win at the end. It feels good.”This year’s been tough for me and it’s the first time I’ll play quarter-finals this year. Physically I feel good after a long match. I worked hard last week and I’m happy it’s paying off.”
