Raonic upsets Murray in straight sets – 2012 500 ATP Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell

Milos got a very important scalp on the clay court: Andy Murray.

The Canadian has been training in Barcelona since last December and he really made great improvements.

The match with Murray was quite remarkable since it wasn’t only about big serve and bye-bye. To be clear… his service was quite good (14 aces!), but the Canadian was surprisingly comfortable in trading shots with Murray (that was a bit too much on the defensive side).

The first set was particularly smooth for the Canadian that blasted 8 aces, he did not concede any break point to the world nr.4 and he managed to convert 1 (out of 2) opportunity he had to break his opponent.

The second set was a bit more of a thriller. The two players were going toe to toe till the 9th game when Milos broke Andy. Then the Canadian went to serve for the match, but  it was “scare-time!”. Milos’ lack of experience made him waste 2 easy overheads (and he is not a short guy!) to lose the game at 30. The set went to the tie break where Murray was clearly the favourite.. or not?… not really! Milos played perfectly to lead 6-1. Then his hand shaked a bit for a couple of points to finally win the breaker at 3.

Milos will play the semifinal against either Lopez or Ferrer.

Did we find a champion?
