Super Djokovic retains his title in Canada – 2012 Rogers Cup

Great Great Nole. He was coming from a very emotional and exhausting week in London at Olympics Games where he was surprisingly unable to win a medal to win again the Rogers Cup to triumph once again here in Canada.

Big 4 dominance

This year the tournament was quite weird because of numerous withdrawals and an annoying rain, but there have been interesting indications. The most notable one is that the Big 4 (Federer, Djokovic, Nadal and Murray) are still a category above from the rest of the pack. Although Nole was completely worn out, he managed to win this tournament by dropping only 1 set (with an exceptional Tommy Haas) to concede only 10 games in the last to matches. The Big 4 own the ATP 1000 Masters Series and the Grand Slams. You  need to go back to November 2011 to witness “another” player to win an ATP World Tour Masters 1000 (Soderling in Paris) and you need to go back to 3 years ago for a Grand Slam (Del Potro in 2009).

Great Nole

Going back to Toronto, Nole was incredible. The semi with Tipsarevic was a masterpiece as he managed to get through the first set just by playing long balls to then going for the kill in the second. In the final his experience was too superior to Gasquet to stroll to the victory in a hour. An incredible datum is that Nole saved 27 break points out of 28 this week!

From Djokovic

“It’s a big tournament, one of the biggest we have in tennis. I’m very happy to be in this position,” said Djokovic. “I truly did not expect myself to win this tournament after the emotional losses in the Olympic Games. I really took it hard. I tried to bounce back and recover; I’ve done great, I have to say.”

“I’m not one of the biggest servers in the game, that’s for sure, but I always try to focus on the second shot after the serve,” Djokovic said. “I’ve been working on the efficiency of my first and second serve, but also trying to be aggressive in the first ball. It’s been working exceptionally well throughout the whole week.”

From Gasquet

“It was a tough match,” said Gasquet. “It’s a big tournament. I felt a little bit more pressure. It’s tough when you have Djokovic in front of you and you are not playing your best tennis. It’s very difficult. He’s going all the time with his backhand very early, so he’s an incredible player. He played much better than me for sure.”
