ATP Ranking: How Federer will be world no.1 after Cincinnati

Nole had a great week to win a tricky tournament in Toronto, but that was not enough to overtake Federer in the ATP Ranking. What is it going to happen after Cincinnati?

Federer has to reach the final to be safe

How can Roger fend off Nole from taking back his throne? Roger has to reach at least the final in Cincinnati.

Roger is currently 75 points above Nole.
Djokovic was last year’s runner up in Cincinnati to get 600 points (he retired in the final against Murray when he was 6-4 3-0 down), while Federer reached only the quarter finals (he lost 6-2 7-6 with Berdych) to gain 180pts.

This means that taking out last year’s results in Cincinnati, Nole will “lose” 420 pts to Roger (Nole’s 600 – Roger’s 180=420). If you add these 420pts to the actual gap, Roger leads 495pts (420+75).

These are the available points for Cincinnati
Winner  1000
Finalist   600

Semi      360

If Roger reaches the final (600pts) he will retain the 1st spot in the ATP ranking because in case Nole wins the tournament he will gain only 400 pts over Federer (Nole’s 1000 – Roger’s 600 = 400)… Not enough to bridge the 495pts gap.
