Federer breezes past Young to reach the 2nd round at the US Open

This match wasn’t anything more than a light training for Roger that was always in full control. Actually the result has been quite “benevolent” for the American. Young was coming from a terrible year were he lost 17 consecutive games and he didn’t look very sharp also on this one. The American looked completely uncomfortable to yell at his box every now and then even swearing when Roger was producing his magics (nothing strange with that isn’t it?)

The Swiss Maestro didn’t break a sweat to complete his “effort” in 94 minutes.

“I think it’s a great story that we have so many guys playing well at the same time,” he said. “Novak to me goes in as the favourite here still at the Open just because he’s defending champion, he probably won the most titles on hard courts in the last couple of years, it’s where he feels most comfortable. He’s beaten me the last couple years as well, so it’s strange for me to be the favourite after just beating him a couple times.

“Then again, I’ve had a great summer and so has Murray and Rafa won the French – it’s a pity he can’t be here. It’s going to be an interesting US Open. I’m happy I’m through the first round.”

Talking about the atmosphere at the US Open “Distractions are big here,” Roger said. “There are too many things you maybe shouldn’t be doing, and maybe your mind is elsewhere once you’re on court. It’s not like Wimbledon, where you eat, sleep and breathe tennis, watching it on TV when you go back to your room. Here, you catch up with friends, go out to dinner, and watch other things on TV. But I love it here, the distractions are a challenge. I’ve always felt excited to come to the Open, I’ve had really good juniors experiences here, so maybe that has something to do with it. The US Open has always felt natural to me, and I do well when I’m here.”

In the next round the world no.1 will play Phau from Germany. Head to head is 2-0 for Roger. It should be 3-0 very soon.
