Berdych, Tsonga, Roddick, Raonic to the 2nd round – 2012 US Open

We didn’t have big surprises in the first round of the US Open as all big names went through.

BERDYCH – GOFFIN 7-5, 6-3, 6-3

Good reaction from Tomas that recovered from his horrible defeat in the Winston-Salem final against Isner where he squandered 3 match points. The Czech had a tricky test in this first round with a player that can be dangerous if he is in his day (he won a set at the Roland Garros against King Roger this year…).

A crucial parte of this match was the ability of Berdych to save 16 break points out of 18. “It’s a good point and good statistic for me,” commented Berdych . “I think he has a pretty good future ahead of him. If he just stays doing what he’s doing, then I think we can see him in the future quite high.”

Berdych will play Zopp (3-6 6-3 6-3 7-5 to Istomin) in the next round. This will be their first match.

TSONGA – BECK 6-3, 6-1, 7-6(2)

A smooth start also from the flying Frenchman in 2 hours and 8 minutes. “I think I played good tennis the first two sets, and after that I lost a bit of concentration at the beginning of the third set,” said Tsonga. “Then I came back and I did some effort to come back. It was not easy today because the weather was hot. I’m happy to go through this round really quickly.”

Talking about his commitment “I play tennis to win big tournaments like this,” said Tsonga. “I mean, since I was a kid I’ve dreamt about it. This is what gives me motivation. It’s to win something like this. I never give up, and I will work until I cannot work anymore.”

Tsonga will play Klizan in the second round (6-4 6-1 6-2 to Falla).

RODDICK –  WILLIAMS 6-3, 6-4, 6-4

Easy stuff for the 2003 US Open champion against his fellow countryman and qualifier in less than 2 hours. When they asked to Andy about this result he commented “There is no ‘acceptable result’,” said the American . “You play your second round, try to win your second round. You go as far as you want. Or as far as you can. I don’t think we think of it in the context of what’s acceptable and what’s not. You play a match to try and win a match.”

Roddick will play either Tomic or Berloq in the next round

RAONIC – GIRALDO 6-3, 4-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4

Milos still lack something in his game to win a 5 setter battle against Giraldo. The Canadian blasted 30 aces and 15 double faults! Raonic had an incredible start on his service game to win all points till the 8th game, then the Colombian had a comeback to make this a 3 hours and 7 minutes battle.

“I’m just happy with the outcome and that I managed to sort of make the most of that moment and just find a way to win,” said the Canadian . “Everything else I’ve gotta hope gets better in the next round. I don’t think I struggled with my serve that much in a long, long time. A lot of double faults, and it wasn’t just one double fault per game. When I double faulted, I double faulted consistently a couple times in a row, so that made my job a lot more difficult and it gave him a little bit more freedom at the same time.”

Raonic will play Mathieu in the second round (2-6 4-6 7-6(1) 7-6(4) 6-1 on Andreev. This will be their first match.
