Azarenka, Sharapova, Kvitova fly to the 3rd round – 2012 US Open

Trashy stuff in the ladies draw where 3 of the most representative players cruised to the third round.

AZARENKA – FLIPKENS 6-2 6-2

It took only 65 minutes for Vika to demolish the world no.133. in style after thrashing Panova in the first round (6-0 6-1).

“It was another good performance today,” said an elated Azarenka “It was a little bit difficult with the wind today, to adjust. It was blowing a lot from one side. You kind of had to adjust every time you changed sides. When the wind is behind you had to be more patient, sometimes more aggressive, more spin.”

Flipkens tried to mix up her tennis to take Azarenka out of her terrible rhythm. “I wanted to come to the net but if you’re against the wind it’s not that easy,” she said. “I was trying to get her out of the rhythm with my slice and a few topspin forehands. But if you’re number one in the world you should be able to play every shot. She’s a fighter. She’s goes for every shot.”

Vika will play Zheng (seeded no.28) in the 3rd round. Head to head is 2-1 for Azarenka. She lost her only match with her in 2006 on clay. The last time they played together it was in Tokyo 2009 when the Belarus won with an emphatic 6-1 6-1

SHARAPOVA – DOMINGUEZ LINO 6-0 6-1

That was a 54 minutes training for Maria that won 54 vs 24 points.  “I played really well and stayed aggressive,” said the Olympic silver medallist with perhaps some understatement. “Her best results are on clay courts where she has a lot of time.”

The Russian beauty will play against Burdette in the third round.

KVITOVA – CORNET 6-4 6-3

Comfortable game for Petra that reached the 3rd round after the 78 minutes match. The Czech is more and more at ease in this North American campaign. After winning Montreal and the New Haven title she is one of the favourite for the title. Apparently she is overcoming a confidence problem. “There it is hot but not as humid as here,” Kvitova said recently talking about the Australian Open vs the US Open. “So that is the difference with my asthma. But here it wasn’t only about the asthma — it was about the confidence.”

Petra will play Parmentier in the next round. Head to Head 2-0 for Petra.
