Murray beats Raonic in straight sets – 2012 US Open

Raonic stated that it was Murray that had to adapt his tennis to the Canadian’s. Milos was damn right and Andy did it very well. After so much hype at the end of the day it wasn’t that hard for the Scott. Just a break in each of the first two sets and a double break in the third and.. bye bye in 2 hours.

The statistics

The stats are clear and unforgiving. 94 points for Andy vs Milos’ 68 (that’s a lot!). 14 aces and 6 double faults for Milos (a delta of 8) vs. 8 aces  and 1 double fault from Murray (a delta of 7… not much difference in the Canadian’s best department). One of the most important indicator to understand the quality of tennis played is the % of points won on the second serve. Andy won 59% of points on his second serve vs. Milos’ 31%. In addition Milos conceded 12 break points vs. 0 from Andy.

Still some work to do

As per Milos’ words, Murray was too good, but the Canadian is still quite far from the big 4 tennis. You can’t play them only with a super service that can crack anytime. Good returners like Djokovic, Nadal and Murray are too good at neutralising powerful services. Milos has to dramatically improve the consistency of his ground strokes otherwise he will be only a improved version of Karlovic and Isner and he wants much more than that.

Murray – Cilic

Andy will play Cilic in the next round. The Croat defeated Klizan 7-5 6-4 6-0.

Head to head is 7-1 for Murray. But… guess what? Cilic won that match in their only game at the US Open. It was the R16 in 2011 and the result was 7-5, 6-2, 6-2 for Marin.

The favourite? Andy off course!
