Azarenka beats Stosur to reach the semifinal – 2012 US Open

Great stuff between Azarenka and the 2011 US Open Champion Sam Stosur.

The start of the match was a bit dull with not many people showing up because of a very menacing weather. The first set was a one way traffic with Vika winning 6-1 in just 30 minutes. Everything was set up for a trash, but the Australian regrouped to win the second set and bring Vika to the decider.

The third set was a bit of a drama. Vika got an early 4-0 lead to squander it in unfashionable manner. When she was leading 5-3 a nasty double fault put Sam Stosur back on track to go and serve to remain in the match. “You don’t want to know what I kept telling myself,” Azarenka said. “I would have to beep that, I think.” Finally Vika got the set at the tiebreak at 5.

“I think she played amazing, so much higher the level was today,” Azarenka said. “She made me play my best tennis. She kept hitting the lines, making those first serves. I kept saying, ‘Miss, miss,’ but she didn’t.”

Sam Stosur had some nice comments about the world no.1 “She never gives up,” Stosur said of Azarenka. “She fights very hard every single match she plays, and she does it very well. That’s probably part of the reason she’s No. 1 at the moment. She’s one of the players you have to get out there, and she barely gives you any points and you have to work hard for every single point you get.”

Next Match
