Federer stunned by Berdych as Murray and Djokovic smile – 2012 US Open

Horrible news for Federer’s fans as the Swiss Maestro failed to reach the semi and… wonderful news for Murray and Djokovic’s fans (Berdych is not unhappy as well!).

It is the first time since 2003 that the Maestro doesn’t reach the semifinals at the US Open.

The Match 7-6(1), 6-4, 3-6, 6-3

We have been quite used of seeing Roger having huge ups and downs in his incredible career. This was a down… a big one. Tomas played a good match, but Roger was a bit awful. The Swiss started well by immediately breaking the Czech in the first game to then being broken back after another couple of games. The world no.1 was not in tune alternating “wow shots” with “what-the-hell-are-you-doing” mistakes. Finally they went to the tiebreak where Tomas won it at 1. Federer committed a whopping 18 unforced errors only in the first set. No good.. really no good.

The second set was even worse with Roger in complete vacation and Berdych grabbing an early 5-2 lead to be broken and then hold service to win 6-4.

In the third set we had a bit of a Berdych choking (not a surprise) with the Czech squandering a 3-1 lead to lose the set 6-3 (5 consecutive games!).

The forth set was very interesting as the crowd was on fire expecting an epic from Roger. Berdych didn’t agree with that starting the set in a very solid manner. Eventually he broke Federer in the 8th game to win the following game and the match.

From Tomas

“I cannot count on beating Roger in straight sets and not getting in any trouble,” said Berdych. “I was always careful that anything could happen. Actually, it happened in the third set that he came strongly back. But for that, I’m even more happy with the way that I was able to hold his pressure and then add something extra for the fourth set.”

From Roger

“I’m disappointed. I really expect myself to play better tonight, especially at night I have had such a great record,” said Federer. “I felt good. Such an amazing summer I had. I really thought I was going to come out and play a solid match. I didn’t do that tonight. Obviously there is a bit of a letdown now.”

“I should come in here with tons of energy and ready to go,” he said. “Who knows, if you get that day, that match in with Fish, come through with more confidence, maybe the first three matches didn’t quite give me that. Who knows? I don’t put that down as a negative, really. I just didn’t come up with the goods tonight. It was unfortunate.”

Berdych – Murray

Berdych will play Murray that won 7-6 (4) 6-2 6-0 with Cilic

Head to head is 4-2 dfor Berdych. They have played only once in a slam and it was the 2010 Roland Garros when Berdych won 6-4, 7-5, 6-3 in the Round of 16.
