Tomic defeats fellow countryman Matosevic in Sydney opener

There was a little bit more in this match. In theory it was an ordinary first round for Tomic, , but it was the current Australian no.1 against the Australian no.2 … that many consider to to be the “real Australian” no.1 and… oh yes.. it was in Sydney!

Tomic comfirms that he is recovering from a horrid 2012 and he is much stronger from a psycological point of view. It took only 73 minutes to win this match and make a point.

From Tomic

“Hopefully I can keep this tennis up and do better,” he said. “I think I’m extremely strong now. I played not too bad today. I’m happy with my performance leading in from the Hopman Cup and I can’t ask for anything better.”

Next vs. Mayer

Bernard will play Mayer in the second round. Head to head is 3-0 for the German (7-0 in terms of sets)… but Tomic now is a completely different player. It will be very interesting to see if he can keep his progress.
