Amazing Federer beats Tomic in Melbourne

Great great match between the present and the future of tennis.

Even if there is 11 years of difference between the two it seems that both (not only the youngster) have improved a lot since last year’s match. Tomic is a much better player (well you can expect it at his young age), Roger is much more solid and mature in his shot selection.

Federer – Tomic 6-4 7-6 (7-5) 6-1

Tomic was proud from the fact that he didn’t lose a single service game since his semifinal with Nieminem in Sydney.. that didn’t quite happen with Roger as the Maestro broke him at the very first game to break him another couple of times in the 3rd set.

The difference between the two was quite big in the break point conceded: 1 from Roger and 16 from Tomic.

Roger played an astounding tennis. He should definately improve his backhand return on the ad court… that’s also why is break point conversion rate was so poor. For the rest… the maestro was at his very best.

“I had to be able to bring the whole repertoire to the court today, defence and offence, which I enjoy,” said Federer

“I’ve never seen him play offensive tennis against me in the past,” added  Federer, adding that Tomic needs to work on maintaining his level of play for the entire season. “We play 10, 11 months of the year, it’s  it every single day.”

Next match vs. Raonic

Roger will play Raonic in the 4th round. Head to Head is 3-0 for Federer that has always lost the first set to win the next 2.

“He’s obviously got one of the best serves in the game,” Federer said. “You always feel, especially after an off season like the one we’ve just had, he’s maybe improved again a few things,”

It will be a tough one.
