Rafter tries to take Tomic back for the Davis Cup

Maybe all the controversy and tension in the Australian team is over… or maybe we are too optimistic… but Rafter is giving it a shot.

In December Tomic was kicked out from the Australian Davis Cup team and was badly slammed by virtually all tennis stars and personalities in Australia.

Then Bernard regrouped to defeat Djokovic in the Hopman Cup, win his first ATP (in Sydney) to try to be a serious threat even to King Roger in Melbourne (well that didn’t really happen).

So… Tomic seems to be back on track and he will definitely be a huge asset for the Davis Cup team if they beat Taiwan.

Rafter calls Tomic

So Rafter gave a call to Tomic to talk about the future and apparently it worked.

“It’s the first time I made contact with him since early November. We had a great conversation. Obviously I spoke to him about just going forward, what he thinks about Davis Cup in the future, if he wants to be part of the team.” commented Rafter

“It was really important for us to have contact straightaway … obviously he’s playing great tennis and it’s a shame not to have him available for the first one in some ways. But in other ways we have to stand firm on our decision not to have him in this team.

“When the April tie comes around, providing we win, mind you, I hope he’ll be available. He’ll be part of the selection team like everyone else. But obviously if he’s playing like he was at the back end of last year it would be hard to put him in. If he’s playing like he is now, obviously he’ll be a starter for sure.”

Good for Australia, good for tennis!
