Azarenka triumphs in Melbourne in a highly dramatic final

Great great Vika that once again showed her big heart to defeat a very tenacious Li Na and… all he crowd that was backing the Chinese.

The task wasn’t easy as the Belarusian was coming from a huge controversy after her medical time-out against Sloane Stephen in the semifinals that definitely affected her mood.

The match was a real thriller. The Chinese had a super start to get a nice 5-2 lead in opener that allowed her to win the first set 6-3.

In the second set Vika started in great fashion to grab a 3-1 start when Li Na had a horrible slip to injure her left ankle.

After a 10 minutes medical time out, Li Na got back to keep on fighting, but she lost the second set 6-4.

In the 3rd set we had another drama. When Li Na was 2-1 up there was a 10 minutes break because of some fireworks had to take place for the Australian Day. In the first point after the break Li Na had a really horrible fall to twist her left ankle and to hit the court with her head. That was really horrifying.

After another medical time out the game resumed, but it was Azarenka to win the decider 6-3.

Soon after winning the match Vika blasted in tears to go a cheer his box.

That was a memorable final. Well done to both Vika and Li Na.

From Azarenka

“I think there was … everything. Emotion, relief, joy. You never know how you’re going to react,” she said. “It comes from the bottom of the heart.

“It has been a really tough couple of weeks. It has been emotional,” she added talking about her controversial time-out against Sloane Stephens

“Unfortunately you have to go through rough patches to achieve great things that is why this makes it so special for me to go through that.

“And fortunately I’m able to kiss that beautiful trophy.”

From Li Na

“I have to congratulate Victoria, a fantastic result in two years,” Li said

“Thanks to the team, two weeks ago I really had to say I hate my team because they pushed me a lot.

“But I think it’s not bad, so I should shut up and continue. So, I know I’m not young, I still have to say I’m looking forward to next year.”

With this title, Vika will retain the top spot in the WTA rankings…. completely deserved!
