Mona Barthel beats Errani to win the Open GDF Suez

What a great tournament from Mona Barthel. The German was unseeded, she had a tough draw, but eventually she managed to win her 1st premier event by defeating 3 seeded players (Vinci, Bartoli and Errani) dropping only a set. A good effort for the world no.45.

Even if this was a big upset on paper, it was not a huge surprise. In fact, the German has an incredible potential and if she can find a sort of consistence she is definitely a top 20 player (even a top 10).

The match was a bit of a thriller as Mona was about to win it without huge problems when she was leading 7-5 5-2 to then face the wonderful Errani’s nerver-die attitude. Sara managed to save a couple of match poits to bring the match to the tiebreak. Finally Barthel won the match after 1 hour and 56 minutes.

This is Mona’s 2nd career title after winning in Hobart (Australia) in 2012 coming stright from the qualifications.
