Del Potro, Janowicz and Simon reach the quarters in Marseille

The quarter finals in Marseille are complete. There was only one major upset in the second round where Tipsarevic (seed no.4) lost his opener to the Russian qualifier Dimitri Tursunov (world no.119) 7-6 (4) 6-2. This is the second consecutive time that Tipsarevic loses his opener (last time it was in Montepellier at the hands of Benneteau)

Del Potro

Juan Martin Del Potro (seed no.2) won an epic agains Michael Llodra in 2 hours and 32 minutes, The match was quite a drama with the Argentine blasting 14 aces on 16 service games. There were only 2 breaks (1 for Llodra in the first set and 1 for Del Potro in the third), Finally the Argentine was the winner even if he got less point than Llodra (115 vs 118).

“It was very, very tough,” said del Potro. “It shows the level of the tournament is so high, that we played in the final last year and now in the first round. I think I played a very good level at the end of the match. He played well throughout the match. I needed luck to beat him today, because he deserved to win the match as well.”

Del Potro will play Simon in the quarters. Head to Head is 3-2 for Del Potro, 2-1 for Simon on hard courts.

Janowicz 

Jerzy Janowicz had a good win against Julien Benneteau in 79 minutes. The Pole blasted 14 aces on 11 service games without conceding a break. Jerzy will play the quarters against Berdych. Thi swill be the first match between the two.
