Nadal faces security concerns in Acapulco

Last time that Rafa played in Acapulco it was in 2005. For this reason there is a huge expectation for his comeback… but there are some security problems.

The security issue

Unfortunately Acapulco is rife with security problems and the organization had to deploy a special plan. At the beginning of February six Spanish women tourists were gang-raped near the venue of the tournament.

“A week after the rapes occurred there was an exchange of emails and it appeared like it had an effect on what we had planned but in reality it had no effect,” said the tournament director.

“There are places where players have to be very careful, but here we must act responsibly with them,” he added.

The deployment of 4000 people (e times then the Acapulco’s police force) will likely to be financed by the local government.

Not a fortress

“We are trying to make it a friendly security, so the people who attend do not feel you’re in a bunker, in a grave situation,” said the organisation.

About the tournament

The tournament will start the 25th of February and it will be played on outdoor claycourts. Last year’s winner was Ferrer that defeated Verdasci 6-1 6-2 in the final in just 70 minutes (that was his 15th career title at that time).
