Gulbis upsets Querrey to reach the quarters in Delray Beach

Ernests Gulbis would be such an interesting personality if he could have more consistent results. Currently ranked no.109 he can beat anybody (he even upset Federer in Rome in 2010).

He has now produced a remarkable upset to defeat home favorite and seed o.3 Sam Querrey 6-4 4-6 7-6(4) in a 2 hours and 14 minutes drama.

The Latvian smashed a racked at the beginning of the decider to then be penalized soon after for throwing an f-bomb.  Gulbis was then quite lucky as Querrey double faulted on a break point when he was serving for the match on a 5-4 scoreline. Then the America did another couple of double faults in the last 2 points of the tie break to give the match away.

From Gulbis

“With some French words and English. It helped me,” he said, laughing.

“I was really pissed off, you know. I feel like I’m in really good shape. I was really pissed off I couldn’t close the second set. I lost my concentration and I was just mad at myself.”

Gulbis will play the quarters against qualifier and world no.154 Munoz-De La Nava that defeated Malisse 7-6 (3) 3-6 6-3.

This will be the first match between the two.
