Diego Schwartzman is currently quarantining in Melbourne ahead of his Australian Open campaign with his stunning girlfriend, Eugenia de Martino.
During a recent interview with La Nacion, Diego talked about various topics in tennis, also stressing the fact that he was often discriminated against in the past for his height. Then the world no.9 discussed his views about gay tennis players. He clearly said that there would be absolutely no issues for him and his colleagues in the locker rooms. Diego commented:
“There are also sports in which they begin to wonder if there are gay players or not, and the truth is that it is not understood. And if there is a gay player in the locker room, what happens? Nothing happens!”
Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Andy Murray had a very similar position on this issue. Federer clearly said that there would not be a problem for him to say:
“I don’t think it’s a problem to be honest. We are relaxed and don’t play team sport and mix a lot, not with the girls, but with the guys and we’re very open.”
Djokovic also stated that he would have no problems at all with gay players. The Serbian legend also stated that he believes that everyone should have freedom to choose their own sexual orientation. Nole once commented:
“I wouldn’t have anything against that, absolutely. It’s everybody’s right to have sexual orientation as they desire, any kind of direction in life they desire. I respect it. I don’t see people differently if they come out like that. I actually see that as a really courageous move.”
Andy Murray has always been a staunch defender of minorities and women’s rights. The former world no.1 used to be coached by Amelie Mauresmo, who is openly homosexual and had no problems coming out. Andy commented:
“I don’t see why anyone has a problem with two people who love each other getting married. You know, if it’s two men, two women, that’s great. I don’t see why it should matter.”
