Super Monfils wins an epic 5 setter against Berdych

What a match!!! Gael is back in style!

The Frenchman won a couple of weeks ago the challenger in Bordeaux (d. Llodra), last week he reached the final in Nice (d. by Montanes) to produce a spectacular upset in Roland Garros opener.

Seeded no.5 Berdych new that the task was difficult against the French wild-card, but he was still favorite to get through.

Gael started the match winning the first 2 sets to then lose the 3rd and the 4th at the tie break. Getting into the 5th set it was clear to everybody that Tomas was the one….but….time to regroup for Gael and win the decider 7-5.

Gael won 189 points vs. Berdych’s 174 to blast a monstrous 26 aces.

From Gael

“It’s a unique moment because I have not won such matches for a long time, and I have not performed, if I can say, mentally, physically,” commented the Frenchman.

“It’s one of the best ones I have played here. I believed I would win during the whole match. I have gone through very difficult moments, so you get tougher.

“It’s magic. It’s a place where I feel really good, and I can go beyond myself and play a type of tennis I wouldn’t even think of. Today I knew I had to play an excellent match, a big match. It’s the ability I have to always adapt and succeed.

Next vs. Gulbis

Gael will play the second round against Mad Max Gulbis that has defeated Dutra Silva 6-1 7-6 6-3. Yo know what? this match is going to be so much fun…!
