Crazy Monfils spurs controversy with a mad shot in Halle

You can expect just everything for Gael… but that was a bit overboard.

The Shot

Gael and Tommy where in the second set on a 6-7 (3) 5-3 scoreline when Monfils did something difficult to explain (but you can see the video).

Gael instead of closing an easy smash he made the ball going under his leg to perform a spectacular (but utterly useless) smash.

Finally Tommy won the point, but everybody remained completely stunned by what has happened.

The think is that if Gael would have won that point blasting an easy smash without doing to acrobatic stuff he would have been 2 points from breaking Tommy and serve being 4-5 down to have strong chances to then win the match. Eventually he lost 6-7 (3) 6-3 6-3

The Controversy

After the match there was a bit of a controversy around if that shot was appropriate giving the fact that it was at an important moment of the match and it looked a bit disrespectful for Tommy Haas (that was giving it all) or the crowd.

There was also an interview (In French) where Gael was attacked for that trick.

It seems that after that Gael has much more friends and some more “enemies”.

We really love the guy, but given also the news that he is not going to play in Wimbledon for “personal” (Unknown) reasons… the question is… Does Monfils Know what to do with his (formidable) tennis?
