That was quite a good news for the local crowd as the British no.1 in the ladies draw performed a remarkable upset.
Laura played a very good game to dispatch the Russian in straight sets thanks to a very aggressive tennis. In fact, Laura blasted 31 winners (17 unforced errors) against a more anonymous 8 winners (4 unforced errors) from Maria.
From Laura
“I think it was a big one for me because, although I really like grass and I seem to play well on it, I’ve never actually done overly well here,” said Laura.
“I’ve only made the second round once, so it was a big win for me. I think it was good that I managed to tough it out after I got so nervous in the second set.”
Next vs. Dugue-Marino
Laura will play the second round against world no.117 Mariana Duque-Marino from Colombia that has upset Julia Goerges 6-4 6-7 (3) 7-5
