There has been a lot of confusion about the first tournament that Stefanos Tsitsipas will play in 2021. Because of the travel restrictions, it seemed that only the players that will compete in the Australian Open main draw will be accepted in Australia.
Why the doubts
Following this rule, it seemed as Stefanos Tsitsipas could not play in the ATP Cup. The highest-ranked Greek player after him is Michail Pervolarakis (no.456). That means that without an AO wildcard, Michail doesn’t have the opportunity to enter the Australian territory. For this reason, some Greek media reported that the world no.6 was bound to play an ATP250 instead of defending his country’s colors in the ATP Cup.
Why Tsitsipas should play the ATP Cup
However, according to reports, the players who participate in the ATP Cup can enter the Australian territory regardless of whether they compete in the Australian Open draw. For this reason, Tsitsipas is now expected to play in the ATP Cup.
