Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev played their first match at the ATP Finals in London with the Russian winning in straight sets. Even if Daniil really impressed by how smooth he was in his first win in the season’s finale, the Russian champion hit the headlines also for the fact that he used the underarm serve to win a crucial point against Zverev.
The underarm serve
Daniil was leading 6-3 4-3 30-30. However, he was struggling with his serve. Eventually, he noticed that Sascha was far back in the court and therefore, Medvedev went for an underarm serve. That worked pretty well as Daniil won that crucial point.
After the match, the Russian star commented:
“I didn’t want to disrespect him but my wide serve was not working as well as I would like today and he was returning it good.
I saw he was 5 meters behind the baseline and I had the ball close to my racket, so I was like ‘just go for it.’ It was just a move to win the point.
I’m happy that it worked because it’s also smart.”
