Stefanos Tsitsipas’ season seemed to go in the right direction after a disappointing stint in Australia. The Greek sensation lost as early as in the 3rd round in Melbourne where he had no answers to Milos Raonic’s serve. However, soon after, Stefanos won the ATP250 in Marseille before reaching the final in Dubai. When Tsitsipas looked ready for a strong push, the Coronavirus halted the tours.
Tsitsipas after the resumption of the tour
Stefanos didn’t manage to win a single title after tennis was back. He had a heartbreaker in the final in Hamburg, where he lost to Andrey Rublev after he was leading 5-3 in the decider. After the ATP500 in Germany, Tsitsipas reached the semifinal at the French Open where he lost to Novak Djokovic.
The injury
Unfortunately, Stefanos picked up an “old” injury when facing the world no.1 and that prevented him from properly compete in the last set. Tsitsipas was out from competitions for a few weeks to be back in Vienna where he lost in the 2nd round to Grigor Dimitrov. The Greek ace also lost in the opener in Bercy to an inspired Ugo Humbert after a battle that stretched over 3 hours. However, during the match, it was clear that at times Stefanos was not chasing the ball.
After the match, Stefanos revealed:
“During the second set my Roland Garros injury came back, and it wasn’t as bad as at the French Open, but it kind of had me on the edge of things, and I wasn’t sure if that’s good for me to be out there.
But that’s not an excuse, for sure. I still fought and gave my best out there, despite this thing that I had on court. I’m sad, for sure.”
Stefanos will take some time off to recover before trying to defend his title at the ATP Finals. He needs to be at his best in order to do that.
