Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams are expected to play the upcoming Australian Open after a statement released by Tennis Australia chief executive Craig Tiley.
Tennis Australia is trying to create a “mega-roaming-bubble” for the tennis players that are going to compete in the Australian Open. The idea is that the players will reach Australia by the middle of December so as to endure the required quarantine while also training.
Talking to the Herald, Tiley commented:
“Everyone had to complete a travel commitment form and that is a precursor to getting visas, which are now being processed by the immigration department,”
All of the top 100 men and women have completed that. Everyone has indicated a desire to travel. If we announce tomorrow that they have to quarantine for 28 days or that they have to sit in a hotel room for 14 days, that will change.
The current presentation we made to the players has been very positive in the sense they have all signed up.
Federer and Nadal are on 20 grand slams each, you have Serena wanting to break Margaret Court’s record and you have Ash [Barty] trying to keep her No.1 ranking. As far as player participation is concerned, we are in great shape.”
Apparently, the players are just waiting for the final ok from the government to do the necessary bookings to go to Australia.
Roger Federer in 2020
Currently ranked no.4, Roger played his last match on the 30th of January when he surrendered to Novak Djokovic 7-61 6-4 6-3 in the semifinal of the Australian Open.
Roger Federer’s best result of the present season was getting to the semi-finals at the Australian Open.
Rafael Nadal in 2020
At the moment ranked no.2, the Spaniard played his last match on the 11th of October when he overcame Novak Djokovic 6-0 6-2 7-5 in the final of the French Open to win his 86th career title.
Currently, this year Rafael has an overall 22-4 match record. Rafael conquered 2 titles in 2020 in Acapulco and at the French Open.
Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal played each other 40 times. The head to head is 24-16 for Nadal. The last time that they locked horns, Rafael Nadal won 7-64 6-3 6-3 in the semifinal in Melbourne (Australian Open) in January 2014.
Novak Djokovic in 2020
Currently the world no.1, Novak played his last match on the 30th of October when he was defeated by Lorenzo Sonego 6-2 6-1 in the quarter in Vienna.
During this season Novak has a 39-3 win-loss record. Djokovic conquered 4 titles in 2020 at the Australian Open, in Dubai, in New York and in Rome. The Serbian was the finalist at the French Open.
Serena Williams in 2020
Now the world no.10, Serena was supposed to play on the 30th of September. However, she conceded a walk over to Tsvetana Pironkova in the 2nd round of the French Open.
This season Serena has a 17-5 win-loss record. The American conquered 1 title in Auckland.
