Djokovic triumphs in the 2011 Australian Open

It wasn’t a great final, but an interesting one without neither Nadal nor Federer in the game (something  very unusual).
Both players looked quite tense at the beginning. The Serb was more comfortable while the Scot looked really too nervous
Djokovik won the first set 6-4, and you could see that he was quite in control of the match. When there are two baseliners that play a very similar tennis and one is playing better than the other it’s a one way trafic. AS simple as it is.
The second set was a very straightforward 6-2 for the Serb. Djokovic was leading 5-0, then he lost a bit of focus and gave some ground to the opponent that managed to break him. There was a sense that the Scot could have staged a comeback, but that feeling faded away.
In the third set Murray did not have anything to lose and he got an head start with an early break. But the fate of the match was even clearer when Djokovic broke back immediately… and then he broke him again soon after.
Eventually Djokovic won also the third set (6-3) and he won the tournament.
What did get from it?
Although DJokovic didn’t not have a prohibitive task in the final, he fully deserved the title. He had a very good performance with Berdych in the quarter final, he was exceptional in the semi final beating Roger Federer in straight sets (somthing not common in a major) and he displyed to be a much more mature player in the final.
Regarding the Scot, he had an amazing start of the tournament winning all the first 4 matches in straight sets without leaving more than 7 games in each of these matches. He had a formidable win against Melzer (6-3 6-1 6-1) that is a very difficult player. But if he ever wants to win a major he has to improve something when he plays this kind of finals. As he admitted last year he did not really understand what was going on in the final, but this year he did not look any better: the amount of unforced errors was really uncharacteristic for him.
Time will come for him… maybe.
