Danielle Collins is having an outstanding run at the Roland Garros after reaching the quarters following 2 prestigious wins over Garbine Muguruza and Ons Jabeur. The American champion seems to have found that extra mile to help her be a bit more competitive in her matches.
Danielle Collins’ coach Almagro
During a recent press conference in Paris, Danielle confirmed that starting a coaching partnership with Nicolas Almagro was just great. The Spaniard retired from tennis in April 2019 and apparently he was eager to get back to his beloved sport in a different role. Collins revealed that she was lucky that Serena Williams’ coach Patrick Mouratoglou contacted Almagro when she expressed the desire to be in touch with a person who had experience playing at the very top. Nico retired with 13 titles and he also managed to break into the top10 back in 2011, and he was therefore a great candidate.
“We had reached out, my team had reached out to Patrick Mouratoglou, and he set us up with Nico .It’s been awesome. I think this might be the first time I have worked with a coach that has been a top-10 player. I think that’s a really important thing because he knows what it takes to be at that level,” said Collins
During the press conference, Danielle acknowledged that women’s tennis is rather different than men’s. However, Almagro knows very well what it means to be a competitor, and therefore it is very important for Danielle to have Nico helping her also on the psychological side.
