Sofia Kenin won a rather emotional match in the 4th round of the French Open against Fiona Ferro. The American ace had to fight a fiery opponent and a rather hostile crowd that was obviously rooting for the Frenchwoman. Eventually, Sofia won the match in 3 sets and it wasn’t impossible not to see the strange behavior of her father and coach Alex Kenin.
After Sofia lost the first set, Alex strangely moved extremely close to Fiona Ferro’s coach with practically all the stadium empty. After that weird behavior, the match changed with Sofia breezing through in the following 2 sets.
Talking about her father, Sofia commented:
“First of all, I mean, I don’t know, like, why her coach sat in that section. On the right, it’s for the higher seed. I would imagine that he would be sitting on the other side. I didn’t really understand why he was sitting there.
Yeah, I mean, my dad sat there. He tried to help me. I mean, he just sat there — and it worked. There’s nothing much to discuss about that.”
Fiona Ferro’s coach Emmanuel Planque, known as a “gentle giant,” after the match commented:
“At the end of the match,” Ferro said with a laugh. You didn’t manage to get rid of Sofia, but I couldn’t get rid of her dad.’”
