Dominic Thiem has finally won his first slam title after beating Sascha Zverev in a thrilling final. The Austrian champion had a rough moment also in the semifinal against Daniil Medvedev as he got injured to his Achilles and there were doubts about his fitness ahead of his final. Dominic had a rather horrible start in the final that put him in a tough situation to recover from a 2-sets-down deficit. Eventually, he admitted that the real issues were his nerves and he had no problems with the Achilles.
Thiem had to call for a medical time out before serving for the decider and he was visibly limping during the final breaker. Talking about his physical issues in the 5th set, Dominic added:
“I started a little bit cramping at the end of the fifth. It was the first time in years I was cramping. It was not physical cramps but mentally, I was super, super tight mentally the whole day actually. Somehow the belief today was stronger than the body.
Physically, I was 100% fine at the beginning of the match. I didn’t feel any pain (in the Achilles). The problem was the nerves, I was super, super tight.”
Dominic decided not to compete in Rome at the Internazionali d’Italia and he is also not scheduled to play in Hamburg the week before the French Open. The Roland Garros is definitely his main target, but it’s time to rest right now.
