Alexander Zverev is having an interesting run at the US Open where he managed to reach the semifinal without really playing his best tennis. Sascha struggled a lot especially in the quarters when he defeated Borna Coric in 4 set after committing 12 double faults. However, it is interesting that the German champion reached such an important milestone at one of the most events of the year without being at his best.
How his coach Ferrer is helping
Zverev is also in New York without his new coach David Ferrer. They agreed to team-up just a few weeks ago and even if he Spaniard is not in the US he keeps on giving his tips over the phone. Talking to the ATPTour, Ferrer revealed:
“Before matches, we send each other messages or we talk to plan the tactics a little. He’s in the semi-finals, so he’s very happy in that respect because he has come through some difficult situations. Without playing his best tennis, he does so much damage just with his serve. Now he has to step up and play better.”
Sascha not happy with Martina Navratilova’s comments
The German no.1 is still very confident about his chances to win the US Open. During the press conference that followed his quarter-final against Boran Coric, he was asked to comment on Martina Navratilova’s opinion that he will never win a slam against top players if he is so passive. Sascha replied that his record against the very best of the sport is still great and he doesn’t really care about the opinion of the tennis legend.
