Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova have an easy life in the Wimbledon 2nd round.
Serena
The world no.1 was always in command against Timea Babos to achieve a decisive break in the 1st game of the first set. After winning the opener Serena had a very smooth second set to break Timea 3 times and grab the match after just 59 minutes (6-4 6-1). Match Stats.
Serena will play the British no.1 Heather Watson in the 3rd round to comment “I’ve seen her around the locker room. She’s always smiling – she seems to be so super sweet. I know Venus has played her before. I’ve watched that match a few times. I feel like she does really well on grass – she’s played well in Eastbourne. And she had a really good win today. I know it’s not going to be easy for me. She has nothing to lose. She’s going forward.”
Sharapova
Maria cruised to the 3rd round after beating Dutch qualifier Richel Hogenkamp 6-3 6-1 in just 65 minutes. Match Stats.
Maria commented “Overall, it was different conditions that my first round match. The court played a lot slower. We had a lot longer rallies. I didn’t get a huge advantage off the serve or the return today – I didn’t serve my best – and maybe I made a few too many unforced errors. But overall, once we got into the rallies, once I realized I needed to be a little more patient, then things started working a little better for me.”
The Russian Beauty will face Irina-Camelia Begu in the 3rd round. Head to head is 1-0 for Maria (Madrid 2012) and that was a nasty 6-0 6-3.
