Serena Williams and Martina Navratilova are 2 tennis legends that have also inspired generations with their activism. While Serena has 23 majors in singles under her belts, Martina has conquered 59 majors in total (18 in singles, 31 in doubles, and 10 in mixed). After so much success, Navratilova knows very well what it means to conquer a slam and she thinks that Serena is putting too much pressure on herself.

Serena’s desire stops her from playing her best tennis

The American legend seems to be too focused in matching Margaret Court’s record of 24 slams to be crowned as the uncontested GOAT (the Greatest). However, while probably there is no such as a concept as the “Greatest,” it is also worth mentioning that Margaret Court won her slams in a completely different era when also some majors were mostly played by local people.

In an article on the WTA website, Martina commented:

“You can see how badly she wants to win a record-equalling 24th grand slam singles title but that desire seems to be stopping her from playing her best tennis. There’s so much on the line and she knows that time is definitely not her friend.”

The lack of crowd no good for Serena

Martina also explains why the fact that the US Open will be played without fans will be a problem for Serena. In fact, Serena is used to playing with the strong support of the local crowd in the US and that will certainly be missing this year.

Serena will commence her run at the US Open against Kristie Ahn.
