Serena Williams’ Australian Open conqueror Qiang Wang to skip the US Open

The Chinese no.1 Qiang Wang stunned Serena Williams at the Australian Open this year after defeating the American legend in the 3rd round 6-4 6-7² 7-5. Qiang’s run ended already in the 4th round and she was eager to have more chances in the following slams in this season. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen in Wimbledon as the event was canceled and she will have no chances also at the US Open as she had to decline her presence because of the travel restrictions.

“I’m very sad that I have to make this announcement,” said Wang. “Due to travel restrictions and safety concerns, my team and I have to withdraw from Western & Southern Open and US Open. It is a tough decision for me. I want to thank everyone for the extraordinary effort and hope to see you all next year in US.”

Qiang Wang parting ways with her coach Thomas Drouet

Qiang Wang has also decided to terminate her partnership with her coach Thomas Drouet since they struggle to find a way to train together.

“Under those circumstances, Thomas and I cannot team up for matches and regular training. After discussion, we have to put an end to our journey by mutual agreement. I want to thank him for his help and instructions along the way and everything he sacrificed for me. I’m forever grateful! All my best wishes to Thomas and his beautiful family!”

Ranked no.29, the Chinese played her last match on the 6^th of March when she defeated Sabina Sharipova 6-1 6-3 in the Rubber 2 of the Fed Cup.

Ranked world no.9, the American played her last match on the 8^th of February when she lost to Anastasija Sevastova 7-6⁵ 3-6 7-6⁴ in the Rubber 4 of the Fed Cup.

Currently, this year the American has a 8-2 win-loss record. The American clinched 1 title in Auckland.

Qiang Wang and Serena Williams played each other twice. The head to head is 1-1. The last time that they played, Qiang Wang won 6-4 6-7² 7-5 in the 3^rd round in Melbourne (Australian Open) on the 24^th of January 2020.
