Novak Djokovic has been training on hard courts and with the tennis balls provided by the US Open to send the clear message that he is willing to play the American major. However, the Serbian sensation didn’t seem to have all the intentions to play the US Open at the beginning of the Coronavirus lockdown. Novak was rather disgruntled by the protocols that were devised for the slam in particularly with the fact that players could have only 1 person going to the event with them. Eventually, things changed (eg. now players can have 3 team members) and the world no.1 seems convinced to head to New York where most probably he won’t cross his path with Rafael Nadal that will plausibly focus on the clay season.

Novak Djokovic and the US Open

According to former world no.6 Nikola Pilic, if fit Djokovic should go and try to win his 18th title at the upcoming US Open. Talking to Glas Srpske, Nikola commented:

“I don’t know if Novak has already decided to play in New York. If he can train every day and has the opportunity to prepare for matches in the right way, then I would advise him to participate in the US Open.

Novak would be a big favorite, but that does not mean that he will win the tournament. You have to put on two good weeks, you must not have a “black day” Anything can happen, there are no guarantees for anything,

Although, the question is what will happen in the next month, because there is still chaos in America when it comes to the issue of the corona epidemic, which takes more than 1000 lives a day.”

Novak has won the US Open already on 3 occasions in 2011, 2015, and 2018. Last year, he had to withdraw when he was facing Stan Wawrinka in the 4th round.
