Andrey Rublev was among the athletes that were invited to the Adria Tour that was organized and promoted by Novak Djokovic. Andrey was meant to play the final in Zadar against Novak, but that was canceled after Grigor Dimitrov was found positive to the Coronavirus. Eventually, also other players (Djokovic included) and team members were tested positive. That created a lot of criticism on Novak that was often (and unfairly) pointed as the top responsible.

Djokovic apologized many times

During a recent interview with Sport-Express Russia, Andrey gave his support to the world no.1. The Russian revealed:

“He [Djokovic] was very upset because of this whole situation, he organized everything, and no one wanted it to happen. He and his team have apologized to everyone many times.”

US Open and other tournaments not affected

There is a lot of talking if the US Open has to be played during the pandemic and if the American major alongside other tournaments will be affected by what has happened at the Adria Tour. Rublev commented:

“There were no such fears, because it was an exhibition tournament. Yes, and I think such stories cannot be avoided in the future, even when the tour starts, because if you take into account the examples of other sports that have already resumed, then there is still someone that gets sick.

But despite this, the matches still continue and the sport continues.”

Novak Djokovic is widely expected to play the upcoming US Open after the protocols have been changed. Also the “Russian contingent” is expected to compete with the usual presence of last year’s runner-up Daniil Medvedev, Karen Khachanov, and Rublev.
