Novak Djokovic is finally back to the practice court after he recovered from the Coronavirus. The world no.1 has been practicing on clay for long giving the impression that he is interested in competing on the dirt instead of playing on the hard courts during the American summer.
The Serbian sensation has been talking a lot about his doubts about competing at the upcoming US Open and it seems more and more that he will skip the American major.
As reported by Serbian outlet Sportski Zurnal, Novak is definitely committed to play on clay in Madrid, Rome and Paris while he has not planned to play Washington and Cincinnati.
“I still don’t know if I will play at the US Open, said Djokovic, who has expressed doubts previously about competing at Flushing Meadows under the revised guidelines. I certainly won’t be playing in Washington or Cincinnati. My participation at Roland-Garros is safe for now, and Madrid and Rome are also planned,” he commented.
Novak might be “incentivized” not to play in New York also for the fact that the ranking system has changed following a 22-month logic. This means that he won’t lose any point if he doesn’t play the major. However, Djokovic is still chasing Federer’s record of 20 slams and it could be a good opportunity to play a slam where his main rivals will not be there. In fact, while Federer will be back on the tour only in 2021, it’s more and more plausible that Nadal will skip the US Open after committing to Madrid, Rome, and Paris.
