Naomi Osaka has been rather active during this Coronavirus pandemic especially after the horrible killing of George Floyd. The Japanese sensation has been extremely vocal in her stance against racism and she decided to do something also to help people during the outbreak.

Naomi and her beloved sister Mari decided to launch a new line of face mask with the profits going straight to programs supporting disadvantaged Japanese youth in partnership with UNICEF Japan. The former world no.1 is attracted by fashion and she has already launched a collection in New York.

Talking with the Vogue, Naomi explained that she drew the inspiration for fashion from her sister Mari.

“I’ve always really loved clothes. When me and Mari were younger, we used to have really long car rides to tournaments, and to pass the time, she would always draw. I just looked at her drawing and thought, ‘Oh, that looks really fun,’ so I started to copy her, which I guess is what I did in tennis as well. But that’s what started everything,” she revealed.

Talking about the launch of the masks, Mari confirmed that the idea started with Naomi and she helped to give inputs about the design.

“The idea came from Naomi at the beginning. I just kind of helped her with the design. I was seeing everyone in the U.S. wearing the same medical mask, and I remember in Japan even before this whole situation happened, everyone was wearing masks and they were quite fashionable,” said Mari.

Back to fashion, Naomi explained that in launching the line, she wanted to go beyond the idea of “only” protecting against the virus.

“I wanted to release a mask that wasn’t just for protection, but could also be used as a fashion statement,” added Naomi.
