Cori Gauff has always been considered as one of the most promising prospects in American tennis. Coco stunned the tennis fans after she beat her childhood idol Venus Williams to reach the second week in Wimbledon when she was just 15 in 2019.
That feat gave instant stardom to Coco that registered also an amazing surge of followers on social media. Talking to BCC Sport, Gauff commented
“I went from probably 30,000 followers to 500,000 overnight, and definitely got a lot of recognition from really famous people all around the world. It’s something I’m still not used to but definitely wasn’t used to then.”
Later, Coco described her feelings about facing Venus at the Championships
“I was really nervous don’t get me wrong. I didn’t look nervous but I was nervous inside My parents always taught me to be calm in those moments and remember that pressure is a privilege. That’s what I remembered during those moments.”
Coco and her activism
It’s extremely inspiring that the 16-year-old is now using her wide social media platform to promote the so-called #blacklivesmatter movement. The teenager was extremely active after the killing of George Floyd also by giving a “memorable” speech.
