BEATING RACISM. Serena Williams talks when she and Venus had to defeat hostile crowds

Serena reveals some heartbreaking moments that she and Venus had to endure during their fantastic career.

Serena and Venus Williams

Serena Williams and Venus Williams have shocked and revolutionized the tennis world when at the end of the last millennium, they commenced their ascent in the sport. It was unusual for tennis fans to see 2 black sisters coming from nowhere playing such a great aggressive and smart tennis. That was absolutely refreshing, but sometimes not very well accepted.

Unfortunately, during a recent talk with Bryan Stevenson, the founder and Executive Director of The Equal Justice League, Serena had to admit that both she and Venus had to fight crowds especially at the beginning of their career.

“I have gone through a lot in my career and in my life. When Venus and I were winning every week and grand slam finals every time it wasn’t a celebration on the tour,” revealed Serena.

Then the American icon added that she had to work hard to create her fan base. She was also recalling how heartbreaking was when she noticed that the crowd was often against her sister Venus.

“I have had a tremendous amount of fans and it’s been a wonderful experience but I have worked hard to get to this experience. If Venus would play before me and I’m in the locker room and I hear the crowd cheer loud my heart would sink because I know either Venus lost or she scored a point, but if it is a complete silence then I will be like yes she is winning,” she said.

I have not only played against the opponent I have played against crowds, I have played against fans I have played against people.” she added.

Fortunately, things changed dramatically for Serena. It was incredible seeing the huge support she earned during her latest US Open final when she faced Bianca Andreescu. The crowd was absolutely on fire hoping for Serena to conquer her elusive 24th slam. That didn’t happen, but still it was great to see that immense support.
