Roger Federer will be one of the biggest names to miss the 2020 edition of the US Open. The Swiss legend had to undertake a second procedure to his battered knee to plan to get back to competitions only in 2021. The USTA has finally announced that the American major will go on after they received the go-ahead by the local government among controversy.
The criticism
The decision to go ahead seems to be the right one as tennis (like life) has to resume in a way or another within a safe environment.
However, some players and fans are not thrilled about the slam to be staged this year for various reasons.
Some top players like Novak Djokovic and Simona Halep expressed their aversion especially for the fact that they could bring along any 1 person. However, that was not confirmed by the latest memo from USTA.
Some lower-ranked players (eg. the always-entertaining Dustin Brown) were not impressed at all for the fact that there will be no qualifications so as to remain cut out from the competitions.
Finally, some fans are not overexcited mainly because of safety concerns.
Why Federer is happy for the US Open to be played
As reported by ESPN, Roger agrees with the major to be staged because tennis has to be back sooner or later, and the Coronavirus will not go away even in 2021.
“At some point, it is necessary to start the season. Even if it were next year, I am sure that there will still be sick people, so it will never be super safe. I think the sooner we start, the better it will be,” said Roger.
