Federer too strong for Raonic to reach the quarters against Tsonga – 2013 AO

It is true… it’s really true… Roger is playing his best tennis of the last few years. It seems that the Swiss has reached a status where he is not worried too much about committing mistakes or losing a match to be 100% focused on every single point.

It was interesting to see that in the first 4 matches Roger didn’t commit many unforced errors and the typical Roger’s “frame shots” that go in the stratosphere. The Roger 2013 version looks quite “compact” and more reliable.

Federer – Raonic 6-4, 7-6 (4), 6-2

This match was easier than expected. For Roger it was just about putting the ball down for a rally as his groundstrokes where 2/3 categories above Raonic’s (it wasn’t Milos’ day to tell the truth). So we even do not talk about Roger’s service games as he was so superior that he didn’t concede a single break point.

The match was just about Raonic’s service game. Milos was able to stay in the match just because of his monstrous serve (19 aces and a trillion of points straight from his first and second serve). But when Roger managed to put the ball down (alias return a serve) for a rally the Swiss had at least 80% chances to win that rally.

With this win Roger reaches the 35th consecutive quarterfinal in a Slam… WOW!

Time also for a sick shot from Roger

From Roger

“Obviously times have changed. Conditions have slowed down. That gives you an opportunity to maybe be more consistent in all four majors,” said Federer. “Maybe I’m taking away things from me a little bit. But I truly believe things are a bit easier to play more consistent today.

“Tonight was a very solid night, so I’m very happy,” continued Federer. “If I can maintain such a level of play, obviously I’m happy I give myself a chance of going deep in this tournament, which is obviously the goal.”

Talking about muscles !!! (???)

From Milos

“In the conditions, he’s playing well, not missing much. As soon as you let up a little bit with a shorter ball or anything, he’s taking advantage of it. He’s doing a lot of things well. That’s Roger. Just sort of swept me off the court.” said Raonic

Next against Tsonga

Roger will play Tsonga in the next round. Jo is a very dangerous player that has a very good tennis especially in Melbourne (he reached the final in 2008 where he lost to Djokovic).

Head to head is 8-3 for Roger. 1-0 in Melbourne for the Swiss in the 2010 semifinal (6-2 6-3 6-2). But Roger will always remember when Jo upset him in the quarter finals in Wimbledon 2011 when he was 2 sets up to lose 3-6 6-7(3) 6-4 6-4 6-4.

Our pick is Roger in 4. He is playing so well…
