Serena Williams is getting more and more active on the business side especially now that she is approaching the end of her tennis career. The American legend has started a series of investments that have as a major goal to empower people with a special focus on women.
Serena Ventures
The 38-year-old has founded an investment firm called Serena Ventures that invests in firms owned by minorities and women.
Talking about how Serena is selecting her investments, the tennis aces says that she focuses on early-stage companies that embrace diversity and are innovative.
“We look at companies that embrace diverse leadership. So that’s one of the first things we look at. Individual empowerment and create opportunity, they have to have that. Like I said, we focus on early-stage, a lot of our companies they can be B2B companies, or consumer companies or they could be things that bring innovation to the world,” she commented.
Then, Serena talked about the importance of investing in companies owned by women. Before founding Serena Ventures, she noticed that a very small percentage of company that benefited from VC investments were owned by women.
“We want to make sure that there are plenty of women who have an opportunity to have a company that are looked at and are seen. So, one thing, the reason that I started, I did investments before but ai didn’t have Serena Ventures so the reason that I started is at the time I saw less than 2% of women in the companies were backed by VC’s. So I said, listen I don’t have a VC fund, but I can start doing something,” she added.
