Serena Williams will not play the US Open if she won’t see her daughter for 3 weeks, says coach Mouratoglou

Patrick explains why with the current measures it's unlikely that Serena will compete at the US Open

Serena Williams and her daughter Olympia

Serena Williams has been chasing Margaret Court’s slam record for the last couple of years. The American needs “just” another slam to match the Australian that has conquered 24 majors. The 38-year-old reached 4 slam finals after her complicated pregnancy, but she lost in straight sets in all of them. It’s clear that Serena has still the tennis and the stamina to win the elusive title, but it’s also true that the clock is ticking.

Unfortunately, this year the American legend will not try another run in Wimbledon after the Championships have been canceled because of the Coronavirus pandemic. Nevertheless, there are still a couple of slams that hopefully will be played this year: the US Open and the Roland Garros.

The uncertainty of what is going to happen all of the world is huge and while both majors should be played, it’s unclear about the measures.

Nadal, Djokovic not happy with the current US Open measures

Both the defending champion, Rafael Nadal, and the world no.1, Novak Djokovic, expressed their dissatisfaction with the current measures proposed by the US Open. In particular, Novak sounded upset for the fact that he can have only 1 person coming along with him and that his movements would be restricted in the area surrounding the Flushing Meadows. That could be an insurmountable hurdle for Serena.

Why Serena Williams might not play the US Open

Serena was the runner-up in the last 2 editions of the US Open and she is always a huge fans’ favorite in the home slam. However, during a recent podcast with Eurosport, her coach Patrick Mouratoglou raised his doubts about Serena’s participation at the US Open if she has to stay 3 weeks away from her beloved daughter Olympia.

“Will she agree not to see her daughter for three weeks? That would surprise me very much. Unless she takes her daughter as a coach and I stay at home, why not, “ Patrick joked.
