Why Serena Williams’ motivation will go to the next level, explains coach Mouratoglou

Patrick Mouratoglou talks about Serena William's motivation to achieve more greatness. The US Open to be the next target?

Serena Williams motivation

Serena Williams is itching for matching Margaret Court’s slam record. The Australian conquered 24 majors while the American is “stuck” with 23 slams. Serena had an inspiring comeback after her complicated pregnancy to reach 4 slam finals, but for some reason, she always failed to go the extra mile.

Serena’s training

The 38-year-old managed to keep her fitness during the Coronavirus pandemic. However, like all the other players, it’s tricky to put full effort while it’s not clear when pro tennis will be back. Roger Federer has even admitted that he has not resumed training as he can’t see the reason to practice right now without a clear plan.

During a recent interview with Tennis Channel, Serena’s coach Patrick Mouratoglou said he was happy to see that Serena is still motivated even if the timeline is uncertain.

“What makes me be very positive is the fact that I feel her motivation is still the same. She came back to a great level, reached four Grand Slam finals. But she didn’t win one, so something is still missing,” Mouratoglou commented.

Patrick is sure that as soon as there will be a clear schedule, Serena’s motivation will be even greater to get to the “next level.”

“She’s practicing like the other players but it’s so difficult for a tennis player to practice without any short term or even longer-term goal because nobody knows when they are going to come back. I can’t wait for her to know when she’s going to play next, because I know the motivation will go to the next level,” added the Frenchman.

Serena and the US Open

Serena’s best chances to win the next slams are in the upcoming US Open. She has recently reached the last 2 finals in New York before losing to Naomi Osaka and Bianca Andreescu following 2 epic matches.

The good news for the tennis ace is that it seems more and more plausible that what is usually the last slam of the season will be staged this year despite the Coronavirus. Unfortunately, the major may be played with no fans and it would be a pity for Serena to conquer this historic slam without a packed crowd. What else?
