‘My dad showed me how to negotiate’ – Serena Williams

Serena talks about a very important episode of her life.

Serena and her fahter Richard

Serena Williams is not only one of the best tennis players in history, but she is also a rather smart businesswoman. The tennis ace has invested and started a spate of businesses, most of them centered on helping minorities.

During a recent interview with Aryeh Bourkoff, Serena admitted that she got a lot of knowledge on how to do business from her father Richard. In particular, the American recalled when her father made her sit during a lengthy negotiation of her first contract with Puma when she was just a teenager!

“My dad is a master marketer. He did everything with my sister and myself just from by himself. He didn’t go to school he didn’t graduate you know from this crazy College he just has this mental thing and his mind’s like that he’s alright, he’s ahead of his time.

He made me sit in the room when I was like 15 or whatever when he was negotiating my deal, my first contract with Puma and I learned so much from that. We had different lawyers and it was their lawyers and it was our lawyers, but it was led by my dad.

I remembered falling asleep literally and waking up two hours later and we’re still sitting at this big board table and it’s like I’ll figure out we’re still here but it was in a lifetime experience that I’ve put into my life,” she said.

Then Serena admitted that she didn’t realize that she was learning so much at that time. Eventually, all that experience was extremely useful in the future.

“I still do myself and I learned so much from that; so many tips from that and you know I didn’t realize I was like a sponge like soaking up all this knowledge and soaking it all. Now I really feel like a lot of this stuff but I do but cut my visions and it’s so out there and it’s so,” she admitted.
