Roger Federer is having a rather peculiar 2020. The Swiss sensation had to undergo an operation in February to correct a problem to his knee and he announced that he would have been ready for the grass season. Unfortunately, tennis has been halted because of the Coronavirus pandemic and the entire clay-court season was wiped out before the grass “stint” followed the same destiny.
During a recent call with Guga Kuerten, Roger confirmed that he decided not to train as he could not see the reason. However, new local events are currently organized all over the places and some top players are already involved in these competitions.
It was recently announced the staging of a couple of mini-tournments in Berlin that will be played both on grass and on hard courts. On the men’s side, top players such as Nick Kyrgios, Alexander Zverev, Dominic Thiem, and Jannik Sinner have already agreed to participate.
The organizer of the event, Edwin Weindorfer, confirmed that they are already negotiating with 2 top players and they will definitely ask Roger if he is interested to compete at least when the event is played on grass. Furthermore, the matches will be played on a best of 3 sets format and the third set will be just a champions’ tiebreak so as not to put too much strain on the body of the players.
“Following the example of the Bundesliga, we want to set new standards in tennis and organise a top event in difficult time.s We are negotiating with two Grand Slam winners. We will definitely ask Roger Federer too. We know that he loves to play on the lawn. But like Angie Kerber, he wants to wait and see,” commented Weindorfer.
The event that will be played on grass will take place from July 13 to 15.
