The Internazionali D’Italia has been one of the casualties of the Coronavirus pandemic. The iconic tournament is played in Rome in May, but with the entire clay-court season affected by the outbreak, the organization decided to postpone it in September.
The prestigious tournament is an important step for the players that “use it” also to get ready for the Roland Garros. The same scenario may happen later in the year as also the French Open has been postponed and not canceled like Wimbledon.
What about the tickets?
While the Roland Garros has offered to reimburse the tickets bought for to witness the event in the original dates, it’s not clear what is the plan for the Internazionali d’Italia.
Therefore the organization released a communication stating that even if they are optimistic about the tournament to take place later in the year, they are still waiting to understand how the overall situation will evolve and the position of the ATP and WTA.
“Dear tennis friend, as you may have already read in the media, in the middle of June ATP and WTA, the two associations that manage the world tennis calendar, should communicate when and with which program the international circuit of 2020 will restart,” they stated.
“The hypothesis at the moment is that the Internazionali BNL d’Italia can take place in September. But we must wait for the certainty, linked to the extraordinary situation of the Coronavirus. We, therefore, hope to be able to give you more information on the Tournament and on the use of the tickets purchased by you as soon as possible. We hope like you to be able to return to play, to participate, and to cheer for our favorite players.”
The defending champion is Rafael Nadal that has conquered the event on 9 occasions. Last year he defeated Novak Djokovic in the final 6-0 4-6 6-1.
